Carlos – As a teenager who ran four crack houses, Carlos put food on his family’s table and bought new shoes for his little brother. He dealt in drugs but never had a drug charge. Carlos passed the GED exam, works legitimately, and attends a community college. Christina – The child a drug addicted mother and an abusive father, Christina conquered drugs, sexual abuse, and neglect. By using the services of the Department of Economic Security, Christina attended GED classes and passed the examination. She is working full-time and raising her two daughters. DeAnné – A beautiful Navaho woman in her early 20’s whose childhood could have been scripted by a Hollywood screenwriter. DeAnné was a runaway, shoplifter, and lap dancer who straightened out after jail time for a DUI, and she passed the GED exam. Jarid – A smart but lazy kid who wanted to be the class clown in high school. No drugs. No parental abuse. Not enough high school credits to even consider graduation. The GED was the easiest way to prove he had brainpower. Marquis - Theft and drug use began when Marquis was only a kid. He owned his first gun at age thirteen. As an adult, he went to prison seven years and came out without a GED. He is on probation and attends adult education classes. Megan – Better parents would have given Megan a better chance in life. Drugs, crime, and neglect left her to make difficult and, sometimes, bad decisions. Pregnant at fourteen and lacking a high school education, Megan sees that her dreams are a long way from being realized. Melissa – Melissa began using drugs in middle school. She switched schools often and never focused on getting a high school education. Eventually, she did jail time, probation, and drug rehabilitation. Melissa did pass the GED examination. Nicole – Nicole was a gangster girl whose parents were heavily into the drug scene. Nicole began her drug odyssey at age thirteen. Today she is drug free, raising a daughter, and working at a supermarket. |
