Adult education is a stepping-stone to a promising future for LEARN students. Some participate in the program as a condition of probation; others enroll voluntarily. As students complete basic education subjects and study for the GED (General Equivalency Diploma), writing often presents the greatest academic obstacle. Students do not write for pleasure. Their daily work does not require memos, letters, or reports. Students say, “I can’t write. I don’t know where to begin.” To their credit, our student writers accepted the challenge to look within and find a creative self.

The idea for a book of student prose and poetry comes from my belief that creativity needs a showcase. The book confirms that students, even those who have violated civil law, can reach the depths of self-expression. If LEARN students who contributed to the first edition of SteppingStones see themselves as creative, worthy, and diligent, then the project has been worthwhile.

To those students who took a risk by sharing their stories and poetry, I say thank you most of all. You opened your creative pathways, spoke in heartfelt voices, and gave honor to yourselves.
